Cheap Electric Guitars -
Start Your Playing Off On The Right Foot
Cheap electric guitars have improved dramatically since I
started playing guitar - ooh, over 30 years ago now - don't
like to think about how old that makes me!
I started my own electric guitar playing career on a cheap
electric guitar. It was a Satellite strat copy and boy was it
awful! I mean really awful. The action was sort of cheese
grater. Very difficult to play beyond the fifth fret. But it
was just about all I could afford with my wages from the part
time job I had. I was still at school at the time and
desperately wanted an electric guitar (never been much into
acoustics) so that I could attempt to emulate my musical heroes
like Ritchie Blackmore, Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton.
Now, despite the guitar being absolutely horrendous, I loved
it and polished it with great care. I learnt my first few open
chords on it, learnt some basic blues riffs and I was away.
You certainly never forget your first electric guitar -
good, bad or indifferent - so it's as well to get the best one
you can afford.
But as I said at the start, cheap electric guitars are much
better now than they've ever been and you needn't feel that
you're losing out too much if you really can't afford the
rarified prices of a really top model like your heroes
play.
Indeed, the top manufacturers like Fender and Gibson, and
even to some extent, Paul Reed Smith, do now consciously cater
for beginner guitarists in their ranges. And, think about it,
it would be a pretty poor show from a marketing perspective if
they deliberately sold you short on the first guitar you buy
with their name on it, now wouldn't it?
If you buy a cheap electric guitar with a top manufacturer's
name on it and it turns out to be a pile of complete rubbish,
how likely are you to buy another electric guitar at whatever
price from them again? Not likely, right? And they know this so
they're not likely to compromise their good name by not
providing you with a basic guitar that feels ok, plays ok and
sounds ok right from the start.
No, rest assured that you can indeed pick up some decent
bargains in cheap electric guitars these days that will not
only start you off on the right foot as a beginner, but can
also stay with you and see you further down the road in your
playing career.
We'll be having a look at some of the better models in the
rest of this Website.
